Yes, when the whole hat is 4 inches long then you start with the decreases.

Do you mean the whole hat (including the knit two, purl stitch) Thanks!

How do you switch colors? Do you use a technique to avoid a jog or do you simply start knitting with the new color? If you use a special technique can you recommend a video that would be helpful?

Thanks – Jackie

Hi Dianne! Thanks for stopping by! you said “rows” so it sounds like you are knitting flat? This pattern is designed to knit in the round specifically. To get stockinette stitch in the round you do knit all stitches for all rounds. But if you were to knit all stitches for all rows while knitting flat then you would get garter stitch like you’re describing. Knitting in the round should solve your problem. Hope that helps!

When I did this the colored band ended up looking like garter stitch. And then going back to the main color you can see the join line. What am I doing wrong?

I have one now! https://littleredwindow.com/easy-knit-flat-baby-hat-knitting-pattern/ You’d knit the basic hat as written in the flat pattern but just add a stripe for the bow. Then follow the bow instructions from the bow hat pattern! ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, you could try adding 8 or 16 more stitches and see if you can get the same size. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have some sock yarn (fingering weight?) that I would love to use. Would I need to cast on additional stitches since itโ€™s a thinner yarn?

You have to switch to DPN’s otherwise eventually you will have too few stitches to fit on the circular needles.

The alternate stitch counts and measurements are in parenthesis within the pattern!

Here is another very good tutorial (better than the first one I shared on the previous comment) that explains how to transfer the stitches!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Eventually you will have too few stitches to fit the circular needles. So yes, unless you know how to do magic loop, you do need to use dpn’s. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yep, what Amy said, just start knitting with the DPN in your right hand. The new stitches will end up on it. When you get about 1/3 of the stitches on the first DPN, continue knitting with the second DPN… ๐Ÿ™‚ If you want to transfer before knitting, just slide the stitches from one needle to the other. Simple as that!

For only three rounds, I just carry the other color along inside, no need to break the yarn and fewer ends to weave in!

Hi Rebecca! It’s been my first time using circular needles too, so I have the same question as you. But here is what I found online and I thought it’s helpful.
https://youtu.be/_OwA7EYbLRw (explains how to transfer the stitches)
https://youtu.be/s0LkNM2ojZA (explains how to actually knit on DPNs)

I just started knitting the hat so I am not at the point to transfer the stitches yet, but I am curious about your outcome! If you get any additional tips, please let me know!! I am a beginner!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Happy knitting!

Just start knitting with a double pointed needle. You don’t have to transfer to start. It is nice when somethings work out easily, isn’t it!

Or point me to a good resource? This is my first time using something other than good old straight needles. Thank you!

I love this pattern and trying out the Magic Loop on it. When you switch colors do, you break the thread? Or is there a way to continue on with the main color while doing the narrow band of alternating color?

I haven’t quite mastered dpn and they intimidate me still. Hahah.
